Holly molly! How did 20 months fly by and I am JUST getting back to working out postpartum?! My daughter is almost 2 years old. This was definitely not my plan. I kept up with a steady running schedule throughout my pregnancy and I had hoped to have adapted to a new running schedule 3-4 months postpartum, but unfortunately that did not happen.
As a mom, I’ve struggled to make “me time” when juggling being a mom, working outside the home, being a wife, and managing our home and lives. This is still something I continuously work on but I have realized that having some time to myself and taking care of my well being sure helps me be a better mom, wife, and person.
In this blog post, I write about an introduction to my Mommy Runs C25K series. I will share about the Couch to 5k App, my running story, why I’m using C25K, and my running/blogging schedule for the next 8 weeks.
Couch to 5K App (C25K)
C25K® is the easiest program to get beginners from couch potatoes to 5K distance runners in 8 weeks. Over 5 million people did it! Tailored for first time runners (source).
C25K is a training app that helps people run a complete 5K after just 8 weeks! Can you imagine going from a couch potato to a 5K runner in two months?! It’s possible! 5K is equivalent to 3.1 miles. It is designed for you to work out 3 days a week (break in between workout days) and each workout is 30-40 minutes long. Each workout alternates walking and running to help build strength and it also includes a 5 minute warm up and 5 minute cool down. Best part is that it’s FREE, you can start immediately after downloading it onto your phone, and it tracks your progress!
My Running Story
I started running at the beginning of the year 2015 with the goal of running Disney’s Coast To Coast Challenge “someday” (a half marathon in Disneyland and one half marathon in Disney World in the same calendar year). Long story short, I had no idea how to start and used the C25K and C210K apps to build strength and be able to run long distances. I was hooked right away! I loved running although I struggled at first. I started to sign up to every 5K that I could find near me and even signed up for Disney’s Wine and Dine Half Marathon (it was for November of that same year). I was a total newbie and now looking back, I’m thinking to myself: What was I thinking!? I signed up for my first a half marathon before even running a 5k! I had a total blast training for races and I was running 6 to 7 miles 3 days out of the week by the middle of Spring 2015. My husband and I found out we were expecting mid-May! We were so thrilled! Fast forward to the Summer of 2015, I was talking to my travel agent about wanting to go to Disneyland for Labor Day Weekend and she mentioned she still had bibs for Disneyland’s half marathon. I was already signed up for Disney World’s Wine and Dine Half Marathon, so if I ran Disneyland’s Half Marathon I would complete Disney’s Coast To Coast Challenge. Again, I don’t know what I was thinking back then but I signed up! I ran in Disneyland at 5 months pregnant and in Disney World at 7 months pregnant and completed the challenge! If your following along with me and putting the pieces together, YES, my FIRST half marathon ever was at 5 month pregnant! It’s a day I’ll never forget and when I crossed the finish line after running/walking for 13.1 miles I knew I was runner. After completing Disney’s Coast To Coast Challenge, I stopped running to focus on my baby and it took me 20 months postpartum to get back to it.
C25K Round Two!
It’s my second time using the Couch To 5K app after completing it once. Why an app for newbies again? The answer is because I feel like I’m starting all over. Being 20 months postpartum, I feel that the safe and easy way to get back to running is to take it slow. I will start from Week 1, Day 1 on C25K and follow through the 8 weeks as a new runner would.
My Running/Blogging Schedule
I will be following the app’s schedule of working out 3 days a week/weekly for a total of 8 weeks. I plan to blog about it every other week. Every blog post during my Mommy Runs With C25K series will include my recap of two weeks. For example, my first blog post recap will be on week 1 & 2, second blog post recap will be on week 3 & 4, so and so forth. Each blog post will include running/walking time, distance, calories burned, my thoughts, and more.
